Geological diversity matches the variety of wildlife here, with the dense jungles on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes harbouring almost a third of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas. This remarkable region with its dense forests, mountains and waterways supports more than 700 bird species, with the second highest number of Albertine Rift endemics than any other country. Rwanda has seven Important Birding Areas (IBAs) including the three National Parks—Volcanoes, Akagera and Nyungwe. Some of the finest inland beaches in Africa fringe the shores of Lake Kivu.
Rwanda’s friendly people celebrate their rich and vibrant culture with a wide range of music and dance, together with traditional handicrafts ranging from ceramics and basketry to traditional woodcarvings and contemporary paintings. Located in the heart of Central and East Africa, with easy access to neighbouring Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya, Rwanda is an ideal addition to any east African safari. A visit here can easily expand to include many of the other great African destinations.
All major attractions such as the Mountain Gorillas, volcanoes, rainforests, savannah and lakes may be reached by road from the capital city, Kigali.
