About Me

Apex Shark Expeditions is owned and operated by Chris & Monique Fallows.

Our highly specialised shark experience takes place at Seal Island which is located in False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. Seal Island has become world renowned for being home to spectacular and intense natural hunting behaviour of The Great White Shark on Cape fur seals. Famous footage of these unique events has been captured on wildlife documentaries such as Planet Earth and Air Jaws 1&2, but by joining our shark experience you too will have a great opportunity of witnessing this behaviour first hand.

Each year over the South African winter months (April to September) Great White Sharks visit Seal Island in large numbers in order to feed on the seals. Chris discovered the unique breaching behaviour at Seal Island in 1996. As such Chris & Monique and their team have expert knowledge on the area and as we specialise in small groups we are able to provide an intimate, personal and educational experience. For those with a greater interest in photography our team is very well trained in terms of making use of the best light conditions and boat positions. To capture an image of a Great white shark, either breaching or underwater is a great challenge and one that we hope to help you achieve.

Although the surface viewing of natural predatory events is unparalleled guests are also able to cage dive on the same trip making this a great opportunity of seeing all aspects of the Great white shark.

Our passion is for all wildlife and as False Bay is rich in a large variety of marine species we like to think of our trips as a “Marine Safari”. Seal Island is home to a 64,000 strong Cape Fur Seal colony. This is the largest island based colony in Africa and it is truly one of the highlights of the trip when we spend time observing the colony. A great variety of sea birds are also encountered. At certain times of the year we can encounter numerous whale species such as South Right Whales, Humpback whales and Brydes whales. Dolphin such as common, dusky and bottlenosed are also on occasion found.

So, if you are visiting Cape Town as part of your African Experience Apex Shark Expeditions can provide a fantastic opportunity of spending time with one of the Ocean’s most formidable predators, The Great White Shark, at the world’s premier site for unsurpassed predatory behaviour with passionate guides.

A “Marine Safari” combines well with a traditional safari to the bush.  A combination of the two offers unsurpassed opportunities to view and photograph some of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife, both on land and off shore.

Trip Reports

Chris and Monique Fallows
Pelagic Shark Trips
After a very slow start to the Mako and Blue shark season (due to bad weather) we have completed 10 very successful trips since Christmas. The summer months in Cape Town usually means that the Agulhas Current is moving close to Cape Point and the water temperature is normally around 21 to 23 degrees Celsius. This close warm water can be productive for high numbers of sharks and also a chance to see species other than Makos and Blues. Not needing to travel too far from Cape Point is also a bonus.... read more

Testimonials

Well we have been back home a week now but are still missing South Africa and of course the sharks. I know you must get many emails but we both just wanted to send you our thanks again for a fantastic three days at Seal Island. We have some amazing memories that we will never forget and to see the Great White Shark in its natural environment was a dream come true. As I said to Chris last week the way that you run the trip is a credit to you both and your team and was everything and more than we had expected. The only thing I'll do differently next time is bring a bigger and better camera !!!

Anyway, we wish you both a successful shark season and will look forward to reading the monthly news letter.

See you next year and thanks again.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the most incredible two weeks of my life. I had a wonderful time with you and the ReefQuest guys and cannot wait to come back next year - hopefully for all 3/4 expeditions!! I have already reserved my spot with Neil and I will learn to tell the time before next year! Everytime I see gulls flying in a group I get excited now (and then have to remind myself that I am back in the UK). I miss the sharks, you guys and Seal Island horribly and am counting the days until I can come 'home'!

So basically just thanks - I hope the rest of the season was just as fantastic.

I also forgot to tell you while on the boat, but before I came out I had exchanged a few emails with Ian Fergusson (BBC NHU, IUCN SSG) who recommended you as the best guys (infact I think he said the ONLY guys) to go out with, he had many kind words to say about yourselves and Rob (without knowing that I was already going with you). Just thought I would pass that on - it's always nice to hear a compliment.

I very much enjoyed reading Shark bytes and will look forward to next months installment!

Take Care Guys!

I just wanted to write all of you a personal thank you for giving my son Cody a trip of a lifetime. Everyday since his return has been a new story or experience. His pictures and video are amazing. I am really glad I didn't know ahead of time how small the boat was and how close they were able to get to the sharks. I was just amazed how much they were able to see, research, and enjoy. Cody is like a new person since he returned.

He has told me about the wonderful meals you enjoyed, the hikes, the kayak trip, the baboon sightings, and all the other adventures. I can't tell you how proud I am of Cody and it makes me so happy to see his eyes sparkle when he talks about his trip. Especially the day you helped rescue some of the animals.

Cody talks so much about all of you that I feel I know you already. And if you ever need a place to stay in South Florida I know that all of us would gladly open our homes to you just as you did for the kids.

We bought a beautiful frame for the poster Chris and Monique signed for Cody. It will be going up in our living room next to some of the pictures Cody took.

I can't thank all of you enough for such a wonderful gift you shared with Cody. I can only hope that Cody's career is as fullfilling as yours and he too can be an influence on a young person someday.

Take care and please stay safe out there, those sharks are huge..haha

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
