Richard Coke

About Me

Richard’s passion for wildlife and natural areas developed from early childhood. Growing up in South Africa’s Kwazulu Natal, it became his dream to transform this interest into a life long career.

His first guiding opportunity presented itself in the late 1990’s. Whilst managing a backpackers in the Drakensberg he was able to conduct guided walks through the mountains to view historic Bushman paintings. It was this initial experience that kindled his desire to share Africa’s wilderness areas and his studied knowledge and passion with people from around the world.

Moving to Namibia in 1999, Richard embarked upon his first official  guided safaris, exploring with his guests one of the world’s oldest deserts, The Namib, and the ancient linear oases of the Kaokaveld and Kaokaland. It was here that Richard developed his fondness of elephant, seeking this small, desert-adapted population of +/- 500. Through time spent in behavioural observation he acquired a deep love and understanding of these large yet gentle and caring creatures, which roam in this vast area of isolated wilderness.

In 2001 Richard left Namibia to discover a remote and pristine area that had fascinated him even as a young boy – The Okavango Delta and The Savuti. He spent the next seven years exploring and guiding guests through this intricate network of channels and floodplains, using varying modes of transport including, mokoro, boat, 4 x 4 and on foot. Whilst in Botswana, Richard was able to familiarise himself with areas surrounding the Delta, such as the Linyanti to the North and the Maghadighadi and Central Kalahari in the central regions. Along with Namibia and Botswana, he has also ventured further a-field into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa, leading guests on safaris and undertaking various adventures of his own.

This diverse wealth of experience allows Richard to seamlessly lead his guests from one habitat to the next, sharing not only the knowledge he has acquired over 10 years of first hand exposure but also his unsurpassed enthusiasm and genuine passion.

Amongst Richard’s special guiding interests are elephants, birds, the seeking and tracking of predators, the interpretation of animal behaviour and ecology. Richard is a keen photographer and as such prefers to take time to really watch wildlife, share his insights and effectively capture moments. He is also a qualified walking guide and enjoys time spent on foot in the heart of  the wilderness, viewing from the perspective of the wildlife.

When not exploring ecosystems Richards interests include: Hiking, fly fishing, sea kayaking, horse trekking, mountain biking, surfing and scuba diving. This wide range of activities has encouraged extensive travel in Africa, Asia, the Americas, New Zealand and Europe. Through this global contact Richard acquired a curiosity for culture and an interest in people and their origins. His authentic interest makes him not only a knowledgeable guide but a genuine host.

Trip Reports

Namibia - October 2009
I have just returned from a very special trip to the remote parts of Namibia. This unique country with it's desert adapted plants and mammals is not a destination that I would recommend for someone travelling to Africa for the first time. The game viewing is specialised, no herds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra, no large herds of elephant or buffalo. What you will experience is a destination and wilderness that is so remote, so quiet and seemingly endless that you will appreciate Namibia and what it has to offer. ... read more

Testimonials
Our recent journey to southern Africa was the most incredible trip we have ever taken anywhere. And while it cannot be denied that the place itself (in our case, primarily nouthern Botswana as first-time visitors to the African continent) holds such immense potential for experiencing the astounding beauty of earth in balance and unparalleled wildlife viewing, it was Richard's guidance that maximized that potential perfectly for us. From the outset of planning our trip, Richard was characteristically warm, inviting, insightful and sensitive to our hopes, dreams, budget and inexperience in Africa. Richard helped us arrange an itinerary that proved to be absolutely perfect. He remained in close touch during the months leading up to our visit, such that with each exchange our confidence grew knowing we had made the right choice. Each day on safari was exceptional. Richard exhibits the calm, cool collectedness to put guests at ease even when challenges arise (such as buffalo or snakes in camp at night, bull elephants checking us out at close distance, or torrential rain storms turning roads to rivers). This sense of calm is balanced perfectly by his passion for Africa, its people and wildlife and infectious enthusiasm for sharing this with guests. Richard is organized, yet flexible; serious yet full of humor, laughter and smiles; eager to maximize each day yet sensitive to the state of his guests at all times. He has a deep knowledge of ecology, animal behavior and environmental complexity. As other reviews have stated, it is rare that one can spend nearly every waking hour for days on end with someone who is practically a stranger and never once feel like we needed a break of any sort. On the contrary, we felt as though we had re-engaged with some long-standing friend and couldn't have been more disappointed when our time on safari with Richard came to an end. We thought we had planned the trip of a lifetime, but rather now we can't wait to return!

I was lucky enough to actually have two safaris with Richard; one in May and one in August of 2008. My father initiated the first one and it was so extraordinary that my husband and I returned 3 months later with our two college and post-college age sons. We therefore saw Richard in a number of settings and with people ranging in age from 93 to 20! With each person he exhibited his knowledge with passion, modesty and an ability to focus on the interest of the person at hand. This ranged from telling about the social structure of elephants while viewing them from the land rovers to learning animal tracks as we moved on foot, to giving our sons photography tips for great animal portraits. Richard brings an unusual combination of knowledge of the animal world with sensitivity for the human one. In the 9 days he spent with our two sons and us he became a member of our family. I have already referred him to several friends and would recommend him unconditionally to anyone interested in learning more than the names of what they are privileged to see in the African landscape.

Many of the most precious African moments are the unexpected ones. Within a few hours of our first game drive with Richard as our guide, we sat in awe as we witnessed our first kill. The energy was unparallel and we knew that this was the beginning of an exciting journey and valued friendship.
His love of the bush and adventurous spirit infected us immediately. It is not what Richard sees, but how he sees it and seeing it through his eyes brought the bush to life in a profound new way. We look forward to many more unforgettable safaris together.
If you only ever do one safari, it should most definitely be with Richard!

My family first met Richard when he was our guide on safari in March of 2006. We had an amazing time and for some of us it was life changing. Richard is that unique individual that can relate to everyone. Men, women, teenages, children. My family ranged in age from 53 - 10. Every one of us cried when we had to say good-bye to Richard. We all felt we had made a life long friend and had learned so much about Africa from him. Richard has such a wealth of information and a true passion for sharing it. I have been fortuanate to have been on 4 other safari's with Richard since. Every time I have gone I have fallen in love with Africa all over again. I guarantee booking with Richard will be one of the best decisions you will ever make. I also guarantee that if you do- you will fall in love with Africa... and Richard.
