This award-winning tented camp in the Lower Zambezi National Park is owned and run by the Cumings family, and their personal touch is evident as soon as you step off the boat upon arrival. Perhaps the most outstanding feature here is the absolute flexibility and eagerness to accommodate each guest’s preferences, particularly when it comes to game viewing activities.
Chiawa looks out over the Zambezi River from the shelter of huge evergreen mahogany trees. Constructed entirely out of wood, canvas and traditional thatch, it blends into its surroundings effortlessly. The open plan design of the lounge and bar area under vaulted thatch is the perfect place for early morning tea, and to sip a gin and tonic as the river glides past a few paces away.
You might wonder about the word “tent” – these structures come with delightfully decadent king size beds, Egyptian cotton linen, wooden flooring, and hot and cold running water. Electricity is available at all times here, along with battery charging facilities. Delicious food and wonderfully professional, genuinely friendly service creates an overall feel of simple rustic luxury. During a recent visit, our request for gluten-free meals was happily accommodated.
Game viewing is spectacular. From the privacy of your own deck, the constant chattering of birds envelops you as you watch crocodiles lazing on the sandbanks in the Zambezi River. Huge pods of hippo grunt and below ceaselessly, and elephants often wander through camp. Buffalo take advantage of the relative sanctuary below the wooden decks, and this endless movement of wildlife gives the feeling of total immersion in this remote, tranquil wilderness.
The variety of activities on offer means that you’ll be able to explore the river by boat and canoe, perhaps try a spot of fishing. Explore the surrounding terrain on foot, and during day- and night game drives. Leopards are frequently encountered, as well as elephant, buffalo, lions and wild dog. Birding in this area is phenomenal. Once again, the guides and camp staff go out of their way to ensure that you experience as much as possible during your stay.
