Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

Sabyinyo is best situated to reach the gorilla trekking areas in the surrounding national park. It’s an easy two-and-a-half hours’ drive from Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, along well maintained paved roads. A helicopter transfer is also an option. The final approach to this lodge involves a climb of about 150 meters (450 feet) up a paved pathway – at 8,200 feet above sea level, you’ll probably have to stop a couple of times to catch your breath. It’s good practice for the actual trekking ahead.

The lodge itself is made up of five double cottages, two suites and one family suite, each with its own fire place - very welcome during the cooler evenings. All accommodation is en suite, with electricity throughout, and wireless internet in the main lodge area. There’s a full laundry- and butler service, and flexible meal times which fit in with your gorilla trekking. The short drive between the lodge and the park’s headquarters means that you’ll be able to get there quickly and early in order to organise the details of your trek.

Thoughtful extras at Sabyinyo include the use of gaiters, back packs, rain coats, gloves and walking poles, which help considerably during your treks. It means less for you to pack too. Before you head off on your first trek, you’ll be able to get a taste of what to expect by watching DVDs of the gorillas on the flat-screen monitor. And once you’re back at the lodge, the staff will take your muddy shoes to be cleaned and returned as good as new.

Most of your time here will be spent trekking, yet there’s lots more to see during a visit to this part of Africa. If you have enough time, you’ll be able to visit the local communities nearby, with their fascinating handcrafts and lively culture. The impressive scenery of lakes, volcanoes and lush forests is breath-taking. Bird watching is incredibly diverse. Your main aim though is to achieve something that few have experienced, and that is to spend time with Rwanda’s mountain gorillas, some of the rarest mammals on earth.
