A wildebeest crossing on the Mara River is one thing, but it was an entirely unique scenario when a pair of male cheetah attempted to cross this strongly flowing river and brave the crocodiles lurking in the murky waters. It was completely unexpected, and something I’ve never seen before.

We followed the pair along the river bank, and it was clear they were intending to get to the other side. Eventually they approached the water gingerly, snarling and growling, knowing that at any time a monstrous crocodile could erupt and take them under. They waded in and were almost halfway when the current proved too strong for them, and their nerve failed, sending them back to the safety of dry land. An incredible sight, and a happy ending for the cheetah which could so easily have turned out to be fatal.
