When a 2000lb buffalo bull approached an extremely exposed lapwing nest, we watched the pair of brave birds do their utmost to protect their eggs that were lying right in the buffalo’s path.
The buffalo was walking along the bank of a waterhole when the furious lapwings intercepted him – they did their best to divert him, and at one point, actually pecked him and flew into his face when he was just inches from their nest. Unfortunately for the birds, their tactics failed, and the buffalo crushed their eggs. We watched the pair eat the remains of their clutch, not wasting this chance of a meal, even if it was of their own eggs.
